Hamilton pocket watch1/6/2024 I have always regretted that Hamilton didn't revive the 974B as a lever-set Traffic Special after WWII. After all, it was used on ships, not trolleys. I have one of the converted (974B to 2974B) watches, but it just isn't the same. Subsequent runs of the comparing watches were made as 2974B movements from the start and were numbered in the 2K series. It was in production (serial numbers with a K prefix) when Hamilton got an order for Navy comparing watches, so the 974B watches already in production were converted to the 2974B pendant-set, hack (seconds-setting) watches and a 2 was added in front of the 974B to make it 2974B. It was aimed at the electric railway and bus driver market and, of course, was lever-set. The 974B was to be a simplified version of the 992B (17 jewels, adjusted to three positions) to replace the old 974 Special. I am a "juicefan," which is a fan of electric street and interurban railways. Having said all that, I think that if I had to pick a favorite Hamilton, it would have been the ill-fated 974B. On reflection, I have come to realize that over my forty-something years in the watch hobby, the more I learn about watches, the more my likes and dislikes have changed. However, each time the thought has crossed my mind I quickly gave up on the idea, at least for the near future, because I wouldn't want to have to make the decision on what has to go! I don't have a very big collection, but I have given thought to downsizing even further. I hate to have to pick out just one or even a few favorite watches. So, keep sharing with us about your favorite watches and why they are.Ĭlick to expand.Who, me? Careful, Jim! Don't let me get you in "hot water"! )ĭan, I rarely participate in discussions like this, mainly because I find them to be an exercise in futility. In my mind the 941 model is among the greatest Hamilton pocket watches.Īnother of my passions is the 990, but that's another story. However my love of that model has caused me to seek out a wide variety of display cases to show off the wonderful damaskeening of those I've collected. I was given his watch in 1982 and have aquired several more since, each in a handsome case and even one with a two-tone movement. He always responded that his 941 was every bit as accurate as their 940's and 992's, and had the class of a banker's watch as well. Sometimes they kidded him about not having a 'real' (open-faced) RR watch if he was going to check their time. He carried a 941 in his overalls which I now have, and always compared time with the RR men during the loading process. As a boy I spent a couple weeks there each summer and went with him to the loading platforms. My grandfather in Georgia used to ship his peaches on the railroad. It has all the same qualities you mentioned, plus, the hunter cases provide a large dose of eye candy for each one. One is the 941, a close cousin to your favored 940. Although I have a spark of interest in most any Hamilton pocket watch that I come across, there are several models that I'm passionate about. In my thinking, boldness about what you enjoy and why is an admirable trait. Yes, I feel better now, Larry has had a major affect on my replies When you start a thread with a bold statement like that you should, at least, put in a ? to show that you are just stating your opinion, not making a major declaration of authority that no one can question. No other watch company can equal those numbers, so you can summarize that by total sales the 940, in it's era, was the most popular RR watch of it's time, but was it the GREATEST watch Hamilton produced ?. I could go on & on about the design changes, the jewel setting compositions, etc.but the 940 did get Hamilton started as the RR man's watch and the quanity produced is only exceed by the 16s 992 versions. Eight different 2-tones Damaskeen patterns? Which variances are you talking about? Single roller, Double Roller.Ĥ. It was the most produced, 209498, does that make it the greatest?Ģ. Your title caught my attention and when I saw that you think (your opinion) that the 940 is the greatest 18's Hamilton, I would very much disagree.ġ.
